High Altitude Living
The average altitude in New Mexico is 5700 feet. That's over one mile high!
Aside from the glorious star filled skies visible in the Albuquerque area, there are many other benefits associated with living at higher altitudes.
If you are allergic to dust mites, you will be amazed at the difference in how you feel in New Mexico as conditions here are not conducive to dust mite habitation. People with these severe allergies often find their allergies have disappeared in the low humidity and high altitude climate of New Mexico. Dust mite allergy sufferers should notice the positive effects within 24 to 48 hours.
Remember, it's the remnants of the dust mite that you are allergic to, so leave your mattress, bedding, pillows and stuffed furniture behind should you decide to move to New Mexico and get a fresh start in this low humidity and high altitude climate.
Research by scientists in Greece shows that mountain dwelling is good for the heart and longevity. People living at higher altitudes have lower odds of dying from heart disease than those closer to sea level, even if they have other factors that could increase their risk.
Mountain bikers and runners from around the world train in the Albuquerque area to gain the benefits of the higher elevation oxygen levels and the clean air.
You may see another bonus in your golf game. Thinner air in the higher elevations should give you 20 to 30 yards more on your drive.
Some visitors to New Mexico, who are more accustomed to sea level altitude, may find they need a few days to adjust to the higher elevation. Fatigue and dizziness are the most common side effects of being at a higher elevation.
To adjust more readily to higher altitude:
-
Allow yourself to become gradually acclimated to the higher altitude - it may take a day or two.
-
Avoid vigorous exercise until acclimated.
-
Drink plenty of water.
-
Be aware that altitude will decrease your tolerance for alcohol.
-
Wear sunscreen and eye protection.
-
Check with your doctor if you have a chronic illness.
Just a few simple precautions are necessary to enjoy even better health in New Mexico's higher altitudes.
